Mobile Communications Overview

An Evolving Wireless Landscape

The mobile communications market The mobile communications market</strong> is one of the worlds fastest growing and largest in terms of dollars generated, units shipped and value created, in both products and services. The mobile terminal (handset) market has over 3.5 billion mobile phone subscribers worldwide, with over one billion new phones sold annually. The common PC has transformed from a portable data-intensive device, into ultra-mobile devices (UMD) featuring Bluetooth, WiFi, UWB, and FM and now to the “always connected” MIDS (mobile internet devices), equipped with all wireless standards and protocols to include 3G &amp; WiMax. The need to be “connected anytime and anywhere” continues unabated.

The explosive growth of WiFi and VoIP enterprise service is challenging the existing landscape and the roll-out of new entrants such as the Broadband Wireless network proposed by 4G LTE and WiMAX are in progress. The demand for more services at higher speeds yet ever-lower costs has led to a proliferation of wireless standards, each vying for supremacy. Similarly the demand for service has put severe strains on existing spectrum capacity, leading to the need to optimize existing frequency bands or the inevitable expansion into new bands, often with a differentiated service in each.

The net result has been the rapid evolution of multi-band, multi-standard wireless devices serving the needs of mobile communications and mobile computing applications.

The RF challenge has grown with the number of frequency bands and the number of technologies deployed in those bands. Despite significant advances in silicon engineering, transceiver technology still cannot incorporate RF front-end component such as filters and duplexors Discrete “point” solutions are no longer an option.

Creating innovative solutions to these complex integration challenges is the problem that the men and women of WiSpry are solving. Thanks to WiSpry’s pioneering advances in the field of tunable RF technology, our products are ready to revolutionize the world of mobile communications by supporting integration of low-loss, dynamically tunable RF components into wireless system-on-a-chip solutions. WiSpry’s innovative tunable RF products provide the architectural innovation required to meet the design challenges posed by the ever expanding range of standards and frequencies used by today’s mobile and fixed wireless networks.

Using WiSpry’s core RF-capacitor array technology, the company is creating a range of digitally tunable high performance front-end solutions that will change the way engineers think about RF-design. Some of the most important benefits are:

Greatly simplified RF design process
  • Smaller size: Board & antenna space savings of approximately 250mm2
  • Reduced power consumption: ∼ 30% to 40% increased efficiency
  • Dynamic functionality: real-time or adaptive tuning and matching
  • Optimum RF performance: at all times
  • Reduced manufacturing costs: no more RF optimization (“tweaking”) on the back-end: Increased yields & TTM improvements measured in weeks due to “in-line” tuning and alignment.
Multi-Band Multi-Standard
A Proliferation of wireless technologies is driving the needs for Multi-Band and Multi-Standard devices
