The increasing number of wireless standards and frequency bands has created significant challenges for RF designers. The combination of low voltage operation, high linearity, tune-ability, and high Quality factor (Q) performance coupled with small size makes RF-MEMS tunable capacitors the ideal solution to this growing problem, restoring design margin while improving performance and reducing power consumption.

WiSpry's initial product line is a family of digital RF-MEMS tunable capacitors targeted at wireless applications. Initially, these range from standard 4pF, 6pF and 8 pF networks up to bigger array configuration for higher capacitance values. The tunable capacitors are ideally suited for antenna tuning and as the basis for complex tunable front-end filters for HSPA+ and LTE generation wireless devices.

WiSpry RF-MEMS-based digital capacitors are built using standard RF-CMOS MEMS fabrication techniques.This results in tiny microscopic capacitor structures, which offers the ultimate in tunable RF performance. These miniature RF capacitors operate in a similar way to conventional parallel plate RF capacitors with the difference that the plate distance has been made dynamically tunable with the help of MEMS technology.

Looking forward, WiSpry MEMS technology offers the potential for further integration with active silicon devices, such as transceivers, Low Noise Amplifiers (LNAs) and Power Amplifiers (PAs) This will not only reduce size and cost, but also enable new and innovative dynamic RF architectures for next generation handset designs.
